Inspire

Size:  16.5" x 8.5"

This is the first of what I think will be a series of three.  It has been waiting to be finished for quite a while and, just by chance, the dragonfly brooch, which was my grandmother's, matches perfectly.
The others in the series are in the "unstarted" stage so I'm just going to hang this one and enjoy it on it's own for now.

Nanaimo Quilters' Guild - Nine Patch Swap

Even though I've already missed the first meeting of the year, I've decided to join the Nanaimo Quilters' Guild.  I've missed being a part of a guild the past two years.  I read their newsletter online and one of the monthly program events is a nine-patch swap where you make and submit 12 identical nine-patch blocks in a pre-determined colourway.  I got busy and made all my blocks for the whole year (dark blue, turquoise, purple, green, rose, & burgundy, all with cream).  Now all I have to to do is figure out what I'm going to make next year with all my swapped blocks!

Bright Owls

Size:  40" x 44"
Flannel Strip Rag Quilt
This quilt is made with 6" strips of flannel and 1/2" seam allowances stitched twice, then clipped every 1/4" or so, and then washed and dried to cause to "rag".  The middle layer is this adorable house print by Erin McMorris for Free Spirit, Westminster Fibers.  It can only be seen through the yellow when the quilt is held up to the light but the colours show in the rag edges throughout.
I used exactly the same fabrics on the back as the front:
Bright Owl Allover Flannel, Springs Creative
Sky Blue Cotton Candy Flannel, Blank Quilting
Tiny Safari Stripe Flannel, Wilmington Prints
Yellow Shadow Play Flannel, Maywood Studio

Licorice Sticks

Pattern:  Honey Sticks, Tiny 70, by Pieced Tree Patterns
Size:  35.5" x 40.5"

This pattern calls for strips of fabric 1.5" x WOF (or pre-cuts known as Honey Buns).  I did it the hard way and used a fat quarter pack which I cut into 1.5" strips myself.  The problem was when I sewed the strips together and cut the blocks I always had a half block at each end (which are now waiting to become another project :)). I backed this in a black flannel with white polka dots, quilted in the ditch with Sulky 733-4119 (Piano Keys) and the in straight lines across the middles of each block using a decorative stitch for a change of pace.

The Fall 2013 issue of Quilts & More features a trio of bags in their Scrap Lab feature including this adorable thread catcher bag.  The pattern is their bonus pattern available from AllPeopleQuilt.com/805

It's quick & easy & could be used for many other organizational purposes too!

The fish fabric is Ocean Waves by Fabric Freedom and the frogs are Happy Frogs by Timeless Treasures.

Gathered Pillow with Tattered Rosettes

Tutorial:  www.justanotherhangup.blogspot.jp (Gathering Fabric & Muslin Pillow Tutorial - also contains a link to the tutorial for tattered muslin rosettes)

As you can see in the photo, I did not use muslin but a cream cotton with metallic gold stars.  I also made an envelope-style back and layered both with Pellon fusible fleece.  I have not yet made the actual pillow so the above photo is unstuffed.  I hand stitched the rosettes instead of gluing them and then hand stitched them to the pillow.  The finished size is 14" x 17".

Crayon Roll

Tutorial:  www.thepleatedpoppy.com

I used Babyville PUL fabrics and a piece of Pellon fusible fleece instead of the flannel for the lining.  This one follows the tutorial and holds 15 crayons but it will be easy to increase the size to hold the whole box of 24 crayons next time.  A Frixion pen worked great to mark the stitching lines - I really love how it disappears with the heat of the iron.
