Gong Hey Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year!

Each year I make my Great-Aunt a gift based on the Chinese New Year.  This year I made wine shades using the pre-printed interfacing patterns by Quilt Smart.  They fit over a standard wineglass and are lit up with a battery operated LED tealight candle - so cute and I believe they will fit in with the previous Year of the Horse items (I can't believe it's already been twelve years).

Gong Hey Fat Choy!  Happy Chinese New Year!  And as always, Happy Quilting!

Nesting Boxes

Nesting Boxes
Pattern by Laurraine Yuyama
Book:  Zakka Style compiled by Rashida Coleman-Hale
Sizes:  4", 5" & 6" boxes

I had planned on making these boxes more similar to how they are picture in the book in linen (where I used blue) and more earth tones but I came across the print by Blend (who I'm not familiar with) called Hello World and couldn't resist it.  I added the organic cotton by Moda (same print, three different color ways) and the blue Color Weave by P & B Textiles.  I'm not a big fan of hand sewing so in future I will probably do the final assembly in a different way but I love these nesting boxes so much that I might be tempted to do the handwork all over again :)

Each side is a little different:

Batik Heart Tablerunner

Pattern: Batik Heart Tablerunner by Connie Kresin of Quilting by the River
Tutorial: www.conniekresin.com
Size: 12.5" x 36.5"

I raided my batik scrap bin for this project   & didn't have quite enough of the background fabric to add a 2" border of the background fabric around all the sides before the binding - however I still love it!

I did have enough bits & pieces to make one more block and add the 2" border to the single block before binding it.  I used a lighter purple for the binding though.

Size:  15.5" x 15.5"

Town Square

Pattern:  Town Square by Little Scraps from This & That
Size:  24.5" x 24.5"

This cute little table topper was made using a charm pack of Amber Chai Batiks  by Avlyn.  As it is sometimes a challenge when using a charm pack and making it work with the limited number of lights and darks, I had to play with the placement a bit until it ended up as pictured.  It's a bit of a different feel than the pattern sample but I like it all the same.  I used the same fushia batik on the back as the binding.  You can see it in person at Galena Bay Novelty Fabrics.

Pave the Way

Pattern:  Pave the Way by Karen L. Gray, BH & G Quilt Sampler Spring/Summer 2011
Size:  52.5" x 71.5"
Quilted by Lainey Wilkins, Powell River, BC

A couple of years ago my sister-in-law gave me a bundle of batik fat quarters that she had seen at a fabric store and thought I might like.  (Usually my family members think I have too much fabric already!). I added to them a bit and this is the result.

The quilting has been done by Lainey Wilkins of Powell River, BC.  The leaf pattern works perfectly with the batiks and the backing (see below).

Thread:  King Tut 963

The backing is a flannel by Northcott called Reptile Rumpus (but no reptiles are actually in sight!).

I think Lisa & Aron will enjoy their new quilt and I imagine sometime in the future a similar quilt will make an appearance as I have a stack of leftover blocks and I love this one :)

Roll Play

Pattern:  Roll Play - Tiny 53 by Pieced Tree Patterns
Size:  48" x 60"
Quilted by Lainey Wilkins of Powell River, BC

Instead of using a jelly roll, I cut my own strips from six different batiks from the Garden Party batik line from Avlyn.  Once it was pieced, I sent it to Lainey Wilkins in Powell River to quilt on her longarm machine.  Some details of the beautiful quilting:

Thread:  King Tut 934

As is my usual practice, I backed this quilt with a flannel - Della Flannel Sun Stones by Free Spirit.  I used the the blue batik with the cranberry print for the binding.

Wine Gift Bags - Quilt Canada Conference

Each year at the Quilt Canada Conference delegates are given goodie bags that contain various items including a handmade item which quilt guilds across Canada have made and sent in.  This year, the conference is being held in St. Catharines, Ontario in June 2014. Jacki Morningstar designed this Wine Gift Bag.  I made two of each fabric - they were quick & easy and my first project to be "finished" in 2014 :)

Kite Flight Quilt

Pattern:  Kite Flight Quilt by Janice Zellers Ryan of Better Off Thread
Size: 38" x 50"

This is another collaboration with Lainey Wilkins.  I pieced the top and sent back to Lainey and she quilted it on her longarm and did (or will do) the binding.

This quilt is made with Robert Kaufman Kona Skinny Strips and once I got over the centres not lining up perfectly, I really enjoyed the look of the finished quilt, especially once Lainey had quilted it!

Happy Quilting & Happy 2014!
