Snack Time Made Mini

Snack Time Made Mini

Size:  19" x 24.5"

Original pattern by Jaybird Quilts

I made the blocks half the size the pattern called for by using the Mini Hex N More ruler and followed the layout for the baby size quilt which uses 27 blocks.

For a change I machine stitched the binding on to the front and stitched in the ditch along the edge to catch it to the back.  I had to hand stitch a couple of spots where I missed it and I also hand stitched the corners just because I like the way they sit once sewn that way.  I still prefer hand sewing the binding on but it was much faster and it certainly works well for this wall hanging.

I only used some yardage from my stash for the backing and the binding - both were white on white prints.

With all the other fabrics from my scrap bins only - the whites are a variety of tone on tone prints (you can't really tell from the pictures).  Some of my points didn't match up exactly after I sewed the rows together so I chose an allover loopy quilting design instead of straight lines so they wouldn't be as noticeable.

These blocks were fun to make - they're sewn with a partial seam.

Corn on the Cob Placemats (for Meals on Wheels)

Corn on the Cob Placemats (for Meals on Wheels)

Size:  12" x 18"

Binding:  Back-to-front binding cut 1/2" wider than front

Batting:  Ultra Thin Poly (supplied by Nanaimo Quilters' Guild)

This summer is passing by so quickly.  I decided I should get my commitment sewing done before it's over and I have an overwhelming amount to do all at once.  I brought home some placemat batting from the Nanaimo Quilters' Guild to use in placemats for Meals on Wheels.  I started with these two which I designed.

High Tide (One Big Star)

High Tide

Pattern:  One Big Star, Tiny 11 by Pieced Tree Patterns

Size:  20.5" x 20.5"

Main fabric:  High Tide by Jane Dixon for Andover Fabrics
Star points & binding: Silent Harmony by Yukon Hasegawa, RJR Fabrics
Background & backing:  unmarked - from my stash

My Dad has a tabletop telescope which sits on a tripod.  As he's looking at the boats or wildlife going by he likes to slide it around without worrying about the table or poking out his eye.  He used to use two placemats until I made him One Big Star a couple of years ago.  When visiting last month, I thought it would be nice to make a new one so here it is.

Prettified Pincushion

Prettified Pincushion

Pattern from the book Patchwork, Please! by Ayumi Takahashi

Size:  4"w x 1"h x 4"d

Main fabric:  Charm pack:  Noteworthy by Sweetwater for Moda
Grey:  Cosmopolitan 2930 by Northcott

While making my other pincushions recently it made me think of this pincushion which I love.  I got this book last year and this was the first project I pieced from it.  The top is paper pieced but is easy to do even if you've never done it before and Noteworthy is one of my favourite charm packs ever.  I don't know why but then it sat - stuffed - waiting for the final seam to be hand stitched closed, with the buttons to be covered and sewn on (there are two - one on the top and one on the bottom).  So finally, here it is:

Flannel Dog Blanket

Flannel Dog Blanket

Size:  21.5" x 21.5"

When last visiting my in-laws my MIL sent me home with scraps from her sewing room (her clean up!).  They included the piece of blue flannel I used in this project.  It was meant to be as I only had two extra 4" squares when I was done.  The red & black polka dots is from my scrap bin.

On the back I used a red and white chevron flannel that didn't hold it's color or feel (it pilled some) when I pre-washed it so it has made it's way to my stack of backings for my dog quilts.  My dogs may never run out of fabric either...

The binding is machine stitched on with a small zigzag stitch for durability and speed.

Another Zakka Pincushion

Zakka Pincushion

Size:  3" x 5" approx.

Inspired by the pincushion I made from the kit included in Issue 7 of Love Patchwork and Quilting, I used my "Wish" by Valori Wells scraps (they were 1" squares) and the Free Spirit ribbon that came tied around them to make this one.  The cute little bird button is from a package by Dress It Up called "Bird Brain".  Again, I used ground nuts as filler.

Holiday Flourish

Holiday Flourish

Pattern:  Frame Up, Tiny 22, by Pieced Tree Patterns

Size:  14" x 36"

Both the centre print and the gold print in the outer border and binding are from the  Holiday Flourish line by Elizabeth Brownd for Robert Kaufman.

I also used the main Christmas ornament print as the backing:

I kept the quilting simple and did vertical lines from top to bottom.

Modern Convenience

Modern Convenience
Pattern by:  Among Brenda's Quilts
Runner Size:  14.5" x 35.5"

Snowflake fabric is Holiday Flourish design #13637 by Elizabeth Brownd for Robert Kaufman.   This is a sample I did for Galena Bay Novelty Fabrics which included the runner and four place mats (only one is pictured).

For the backing I used Fresco by Patrick Lose for Robert Kaufman D#11834.

The pattern went together quite smoothly.  I did not have the suggested ruler so made a template from the pattern provided and found that it worked quite well as long as I trimmed my blocks to 3" wide after piecing them (it was just a smidge off each side - the height was fine as is).

A closer look at a placemat:

Some more pics of the runner:

I like this sample so much I might have to make it again for myself...

Death by Triangles (In Wish)

Death by Triangles (In Wish)

Pattern from:  Simply Charming Minis by Moose on the Porch Quilts

Size:  21.25" x 21.25"

Charm Pack:  Wish by Valori Wells for Free Spirit (I needed two as they only contain 30 pieces)

Background & Binding:  Northcott 9020 by Deborah Edwards (It's gray even though it looks a little blue-ish in my photos)

For the backing I used a fabric from my stash - Timeless Treasures Patt #Lotus-C3131.

The pattern warns that it contains eighty-eight 1.5" half square triangles in it's first line but I think it was worth it!!!

Zakka Pincushion

Zakka Pincushion

Pattern:  Issue 7, Love Patchwork & Quilting
Size:  3" x 5" approx

This little pincushion came as a free kit with my Love Patchwork & Quilting magazine.  It was the first issue I had ever had and I'm enjoyed enough to get the next one too - even on my quest to stop buying magazines (or at least so many).

I added a layer of fusible fleece to the front panel & the back panel before sewing them together and did a few straight lines of decorative stitching on the back panel.  I also used ground nut shells to stuff the pincushion instead of polyester toy stuffing.  The only other change was I substituted a different self-cover button as the one included in the kit had a defective shank - but the end result is very close!

Bartholo-meow's Reef

Bartholo-meow's Reef
Pattern:  To-a-Tee, Tiny 86
By Pieced Tree Patterns
Size:  40.5" x 40.5"

This quilt uses a charm pack - I chose Moda's Bartholo-meow's Reef, added a cream with white polka dots as the background, and the blue with multi-coloured circles and dots by Blank Quilting for the border and binding.

The backing is a white flannel with multi-coloured circles.

I quilted various sizes (and shapes) of loops over the whole quilt.
