Mini Trees Ornament

"Mini Trees Ornament"
Size:  2.75" x 4.5"

Inspired by: Trees and Mini Trees patterns by Amanda Jean Nyberg of Crazy Mom Quilts
www.crazymomquilts.blogspot.ca

I couldn't help myself & had to make a new ornament for our little tree this year.  When I saw Amanda Jean's Trees & Mini Trees patterns, I just loved them and they inspired me to make an ornament-sized version.

Elementary

"Elementary"

Pattern:  Sorbet Mini Quilt by Katie Clark Blakesley from the book Vintage Quilt Revival

Size:  18.375" x 18.375" (I made it smaller than the pattern because of how many charm squares I had to work with & then I lost a little more with my quilting)

The fabrics on the front and binding are all Elementary by Sweetwater for Moda.

The backing is a Robert Kaufman Fusions from my stash from 2008.

The Elementary line contains letters, numbers, dots & shapes - I just love it!!!

I meandered in the lighter (background) blocks and stitched in the ditch in the other blocks, allowing them to "pop".

Serge & Sew Colour of the Month - December

Serge & Sew's Colour of the Month - December - Gold

I chose to make some ornaments this month with my fabric.   First. I had some wooden stars (Carved Ornament by Celebrate It) which I traced onto freezer paper and used to cut out my fabric.  I removed their hangers, then glued the fabric onto the wood using Aleene's Clear Gel Tacky Glue.  I did one side, let it completely dry, then did the other.  On the front side, I cut back the size of the star some to match the bevelling of the wood.  I replaced the hangers and was done - quick & easy, if you don't count the drying time.

Front & back:

I got the embellishment made through a local Etsy shop Flouster.  It's actually a dog tag but you can customize any wording you want and pick your font too!  I know a few people who can hang it year round in their studios :).  The actual ornament is one from a collection in the project A Bit of Cheer at AllPeopleQuilt.com, the Variable Star Ornament but instead of binding it, I turned it and added the eyelet for the hanger.  I did have issues with the eyelet on one but from the front it looks fine (it didn't catch the back layer of fabric) so I decided to leave it as is rather than trying to remove it & replace it.

Serge & Sew Colour of the Month - November

Colour of the Month - November

Pattern:  Star Cluster
By:  Judy Martin 2011
Size:  12" x 12" (finished)

This month Serge & Sew's Colour of the Month fabric is the poppy fabric & they're asking that you use it to make a 12" x 12" block to be made into a donation quilt.  I chose the Star Cluster block by Judy Martin & chose to use the main fabric in two of the stars instead of making each one different.

By:  Bunnie Cleland
Size:  20.25" x 59"

Main fabric:  Happy Harvest by Kelly Mueller of The Wooden Bear for Red Rooster Fabrics

I fussy cut some of the sunflowers from the scraps to make the borders for my label.

Glamour Spider (Colour of the Month - Black)

Glamour Spider

Size:  13.75" x 12.75"

This little wallhanging is my own design.  It was inspired by the Spider Pendant which I purchased at Michael's.  The black fabric which I used for the spiderweb was the Colour of the Month fabric for October at Serge & Sew (Timeless Treasures, Patt# HUE-C1717). It's hard to see in the photos but it almost looks like it has dew drops on it.  The background fabric is also from Serge & Sew but from 2009, yes I said 2009!  It is Batty Halloween by South Sea Imports and it was in my stash.

I drew the spiderweb (freehand & with a ruler) onto some Lite Steam-A-Seam 2, fused it onto the back of the black fabric, then cut it out and fused it onto my background.  After layering my batting and backing, I then appliquéd the edges of the spiderweb - quilting at the same time!

On the back I used a black cotton print with a white spiderweb from my stash - Eye of Newt by Maxa Nobie for Moda - sorry, I don't know any other details about it - it was in my stash too.  The binding is black Kona Cotton from Robert Kaufman, my go-to black.

And just one more...

Zakka Pincushion

Zakka Pincushion

Pattern by Sonya Cantie
Website:  coziehomemaking.typepad.com
Book:  Zakka Style compiled by Rashida Coleman-Hale

Size:  5.5" x 4.25"

This was another quick and easy project from the Zakka Style book.  I made a couple of changes:  used fusible fleece instead of interfacing (it gives the pincushion a little more body) and stuffed it with ground but shells from Plum Easy instead of polyester fiberfill (it gives the pincushion a little more weight).

The buttons came from the Dollar Tree in the scrapbooking section.  The ribbon also came from the Dollar Tree.  Everything else was from Serge & Sew.

The back:

And an up close look at the adorable label:

Patchwork Pencil Case

Patchwork Pencil Case

Pattern by Shannon Dreval
Website:  petitsdetails.com
Book:  Zakka Style compiled by Rashida Coleman-Hale

Since I had the book out, and I had the "Handmade just for you" label to use, I decide to make the Patchwork Pencil Case.

It was fast and easy to sew together - I think it took the longest to pick my fabrics, all from my scrap bins.

Sugar Cookies

Sugar Cookies

Pattern:  inspired by Amy Sinibaldi of Nana Company
nanacompany.typepad.com

After making these from a photo online, I was reminded by a friend that there is a pattern in the book (that I already own) Zakka Style, compiled by Rashida Coleman-Hale.  So the next batch I "bake" will be from the book and will probably have the cute sugar cookie mix sack to go along with them.

At first glance, it's hard to tell they're made from felt, isn't it?

The Boo Crew (Charming Chevrons)

The Boo Crew

Pattern:  Charming Chevrons, Tiny 97 by Pieced Tree Patterns

Size:  34.5" x 42"

Charm Pack:  The Boo Crew by Sweetwater for Moda

Background & Binding:  Quilter's Linen, Screen Print D#9864 Robert Kaufman

Here are some of my favourite prints from the charm pack!

On the back I used a dark grey flannelette with white polka dots.  The binding is the same as the background.

I quilted straight lines following the chevrons in white thread and just straight in the borders, approximately 0.5" apart.

Just one more angle shot:

The front of the quilt used 40 charm squares so I used the other two (a white on white print and a duplicate of a black and white print) to make my label.  Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of it prior to taking it up to Serge & Sew as a sample - so you'll have to pop into the shop to see it in person :). I love using up the whole package of charms!!!

Little Zig For Fall

Little Zig For Fall

Pattern:  based on Little Zig by Monica Solorio-Snow

Size:  9.125" x 11.25"

This is one of my projects for Serge & Sew's September Colour of the Month - Orange.  The provided fabric was used for the middle zigzag and the binding.  The background was a fat quarter (& I also had enough to piece it for the backing too).  The greens were from my scrap bin.

White Stars for Fall

White Stars for Fall

Pattern:  White Stars by Julie Herman (Jaybird Quilts)
Book:  Fun-Size Quilts
Size:  12.75" x 16.5"

I started this quilt with white Kona cotton and the Timeless Treasures Fabrics, Inc Patt# HARVEST-CM6445.  I used it in three stars (top centre, third row left & bottom right) and for the binding.  All the other fabrics were from my scrap bins.

Each block finishes at 4" x 4".

I used a white on white print from my stash for the backing.

Straight line quilting in white thread horizontally, vertically, and diagonally made an asterisk in each white star.

One more view.
